What are pre anaesthetic blood tests?

A pre-anaesthetic blood test tells us a lot about your pets health on the inside, they can notify us of changes that would not necessarily be picked up on physical examination. These blood tests focus on any anaemia or infection, and liver and kidney function. This helps us to tailor their medication further, as the liver and kidneys are responsible for processing many of the medications used before, during and after anaesthesia.

Blood tests are minimally invasive and require us to collect a small blood sample which we run in our own laboratory and get results quickly. If you pet is worried or wriggly we often take the sample once they have had a light sedation.

What is fluid therapy and how does it benefit my pet?

Fluid therapy, also often referred to as ‘being on a drip’, is the administration of fluids such as saline via an intravenous catheter. Fluid therapy helps to maintain your pet’s blood pressure whilst they are under anaesthetic and it also supports the liver and the kidneys in their work at processing the anaesthetic medications, which can speed up their recovery time.
